Understanding #FASD through games shows:
#FASDstrong people are living in a Jeopardy world (with a slow buzzer)
There's tons of stimulus. It's fast paced. Questions are coming left and right Answers are needed quickly but you can't get them out in time
And it gets frustrating
over this #FASDAwarenessMonth most of my tweets seem to be scary or negative but let me be clear
Our #FASDStrong child bring so much joy into ours & so many other people’s lives
He like so many other #FASD people have so much to offer & contribute to our community!
Who do acting, politics & music have in common? They play to #FASD strengths such as expressive language & creativity
Of course there are lots of #FASDStrong people who are everyday successes holding jobs, being community active & having healthy relationships
One area where #FASD is absent is in the media. There is nowhere that my son can watch a TV or movie & see somebody they can relate to
Unfortunately we’re not going to see a muppet on Sesame Street who get dysregulated and then swears at Elmo & throws a book at him #FASDStrong
Language is really important. Using the right words & phrasing is paramount to a #FASDStrong child’s self esteem
For example
Our son: “I get mad all the time”
Me: “No you get dysregulated all the time. There’s a big difference”

Words Matter! Make sure the language you use when talking about #FASD isn't stigmatizing.

This is a huge thing remember- #FASD overlaps & looks like other disability
This is why it is so imperative that we learn about #FASD. By learning strategies to handle FASD, we learn how to handle other disabilities as well #FASDStrong #FASDAwarenessMonth
Those with #FASD will also have traits of other neurological conditions often leading to being misdiagnosed 😲
Always remember that #FASD is a brain based conditioned. When a #FASDStrong child get dysregulated, they can be hard to communicate to or reason with
Because their brain is where the problem is in the first place

Kids who are #FASDStrong have memories like dry erase boards. They forget and act like everything is fine very quickly.
As a parent, you need to do the same. Don't stay mad. Don't hold grudges. Forget everything that happened & move on with optimism #FASD #FASDAwarenessMonth
Every #FASDStrong child gets disregulated. When they are calmed, they need love, affection, empathy not punishment or discipline
The deregulation a #FASD child experienced was likely triggered by core feelings & they likely feels terrible afterwards
They need your support
One aspect of #FASD is emotional dysregulation. When a #FASDStrong child get dysregulated, internally it feels to them as if their brain is on fire. Externally it appears as screaming, throwing, fighting & swearing. Despite how it looks, none of this is actual "misbehaviour"
#FASDStrong people suffer from dysmaturity-an inability to act their physical age. It is vitally important that people use a “stage, not age” approach & meet FASD kids at their level
Remember that #FASD is a spectrum disorder so this looks different for every person
