The Rolls-Royce and the Reckoning: Why Nyesom Wike’s Clock Is Running Out

On the question of tribalism first, because it must be named before we move on. When Tinubu’s attack dogs reach for ethnic slurs, they should at least pause to consider what they are actually doing. I am half Yoruba, half Ijaw. So the question becomes a serious one: which side of me exactly are they insulting? The left? The right? The whole? It is 2026. This is the level Nigeria’s political discourse is still operating at. It is not just sad. It is a national emergency with a gravel voice and a Rolls-Royce.
And that brings us to Nyesom Wike.
My Ijaw blood does not sleep comfortably while this man operates unchecked in Nigerian public life. As FCT Minister — a position that gives him enormous power over land, contracts, and federal patronage in the capital city of the nation — Wike has continued to behave not like a servant of the people, but like a feudal lord who has never heard of the internet, accountability legislation, or the permanent nature of digital evidence.
The Rolls-Royce Question That Will Not Go Away
When former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi publicly questioned how a public servant could afford a Rolls-Royce, Wike’s response was instructive  — not for its content, but for its tone. He told Channels Television: “I have a Rolls-Royce. So what? Nobody gave it to me. I bought it. My father was a general manager of several companies. As a student, I was driving a Mercedes-Benz.” 
So what, he says.
That phrase — so what — is the complete philosophical worldview of a man who genuinely believes he is beyond question. It is the language of someone who has operated inside a system so corrupted, and for so long, that the idea of a Nigerian public official being held accountable for unexplained wealth strikes him as mildly amusing. He does not even feel the heat beneath his feet.
But the ground is shifting.
When asked directly whether he is corrupt, Wike replied: “No court has ever found me guilty of corruption.”  That is the legal minimum, not a moral defence. It is also the last refuge of every kleptocrat in history who escaped accountability long enough to believe they had escaped it permanently.
They had not. And neither will he.
Rivers State: Eight Years, One Question
Rivers State, according to 2025–2026 data, is the third-ranked oil-producing state in Nigeria by volume. Yet Rivers records a 62.4 per cent rate of multi-dimensional poverty.  Eight years. Wike governed for eight years. The commissioning ceremonies were televised in wide-screen. The poverty statistics do not lie.
Towards the end of his second term, Wike embarked on a massive commissioning of infrastructural projects that brought him into the limelight as the best governor in terms of state development. Nobody cared to ask about what he had been doing with the state’s funds before that time.  That question is now being asked. Loudly. By courts, by international observers, and by Ijaw sons and daughters who are tired.
Destabilisation as Policy
What Wike did to Rivers State after losing control of it is one of the ugliest chapters in recent Nigerian political history. The political crisis triggered by the feud between Wike and his successor Governor Siminalayi Fubara led President Tinubu to declare a six-month state of emergency in March 2025, suspending the governor, his deputy, and state lawmakers, and installing retired vice admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as sole administrator.  A duly elected government, suspended. An entire state’s democratic machinery, switched off. And Wike’s fingerprints are all over the switch.
This marked the third impeachment attempt against Fubara since he took office in 2023, with previous efforts in 2023 and 2025 largely influenced by Wike’s political operation.  Three attempts. Three. The man simply does not accept that Rivers State belongs to the people of Rivers State.
There is also the documented confrontation in Abuja where soldiers stopped Wike and FCT Administration officials from gaining access to disputed estate land, leading to a heated verbal exchange between Wike and a military officer.  A federal minister, blocked by soldiers from what appears to be a land-grabbing exercise, shouting at uniformed personnel on camera. This is the character of the man holding one of Nigeria’s most powerful ministerial portfolios.
And then there is the recording. A recording widely circulated in the public domain, including on TikTok and other platforms, allegedly shows Wike threatening to kill a political opponent.  It is available. Anyone can watch it. The question that follows is the one I put formally to the President of Nigeria in my petition of February 8, 2026: why has no investigation been opened on the basis of that recording?
The Petition Is on Record
In that formal petition, I demanded a full EFCC and ICPC investigation into allegations of corruption, diversion of public funds, abuse of office, and unexplained wealth, including a full asset and lifestyle audit covering his Rolls-Royce and other luxury vehicles, his properties abroad, and any corporate proxies or fronts holding assets on his behalf.  The Nigerian public deserves to know the source of this wealth. That petition is on record at Sahara Reporters and is on file with multiple Nigerian and international bodies.
Governor Fubara himself announced the decision to set up a panel of inquiry into governance in Rivers State under Wike’s tenure.  That process, if pursued honestly, will be illuminating.
Why the Clock Is Running
Wike operates on the assumption that Nigeria’s accountability architecture is permanently broken. He is wrong, and he is wrong for the same reason every pre-digital kleptocrat has been wrong in the end: the evidence is no longer containable. It lives on servers. It circulates on social media. It is indexed by international search engines. It arrives on the desks of foreign governments, international law enforcement bodies, and investigative journalists who have no loyalty to Abuja’s political arrangements.
The world has changed. The internet does not forget. Artificial intelligence does not tire. And the generation of Nigerians now entering civic life has no emotional investment in the old order that protected men like this.
He bought a Rolls-Royce on a public servant’s salary and asked the nation: so what?
Nigeria will answer that question. It is only a matter of when.
