Very #few Indian cities have such a diverse public transport ecosystem.
Yet, the mode that carries the highest number of people—over 35 lakh passengers every day—is the bus. Ironically, it is also the mode that gets #stuck in traffic the most.
Recently, it was reported that Hon’ble CM Thiru Joseph Vijay @CMOTamilnadu , during the Transport Department review meeting , showed officials a Bus Rapid Transit (#BRT) system from #SouthKorea and asked them to study it. That is a very encouraging direction.
A BRT is not just a bus lane.
It is a complete mobility system with dedicated or priority corridors where appropriate, #better stations, #faster boarding, intelligent signalling, safer #pedestrian access, efficient operations and #reliable journey times.
Even where a full BRT is not feasible, bus priority lanes, like those used in Singapore during peak hours, can make a significant difference.
I always say this:
A modern smartphone without a 5G network never delivers the experience customers expect.
Similarly, in public transport, if we truly want to transform the commuter experience, along with investing in modern buses, we must also give them a 5G road network through BRT and bus priority lanes—enabling faster journeys, #reliable travel times, greater convenience and better accessibility. Only then will people experience the true potential of a modern public transport system.
