As Canada’s premiers and Prime Minister gather tonight over lobster Thermidor on PEI’s North Shore, overlooking the Northumberland Strait, they should consider Europe’s costly experience with China before deciding how to respond to President Trump.
China did not hollow out European industry by itself. German corporations and political leaders enabled it, trading technology, industrial capacity and strategic independence for temporary access to the Chinese market. Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and BASF deepened their exposure even as Beijing subsidized the competitors now displacing European production and jobs.
Canada is beginning to repeat that mistake.
In exchange for temporary Chinese tariff relief on canola, Ottawa has granted preferential access to 49,000 Chinese EVs. That is not diversification; it is an invitation for Chinese dealerships, software, data systems, supply chains and state-supported investment to establish a North American beachhead.
The first 49,000 vehicles are only the opening move.
Canada cannot condemn China’s state-led economy while actively enabling its expansion. Nor can we demand privileged access under CUSMA while creating the very Chinese industrial gateway Washington is determined to prevent.
Before responding “tariff for tariff” to Trump, our leaders must confront their own strategic contradiction. Europe’s predicament was created in Beijing, but enabled in Berlin and Brussels. Canada’s must not be created in Beijing and enabled in Ottawa.
The cheapest price is rarely the lowest cost.
