It's almost Halloween! As fun as it is for humans, not all dogs enjoy the festivities. If you're going to dress up your pets, introduce costumes slowly. Let them sniff the outfit and gently lay it over them before attempting to get them in it. Put it on, reward them, and take it off. If they're stressed or uncomfortable, don't force it. It takes time to condition them to wearing different things. A steady stream of strangers coming to the door can be very stressful for some dogs. These dogs will likely be happier in a room by themselves with a good chew. Other dogs find it very exciting and want to be right in the action. They might get over stimulated and struggle to behave, or even try to jump on an unsuspecting trick or treater. Be sure they are always under control at the door (it's a good idea to have them on a leash unless they have a really solid down stay), and make sure your dog has a quiet, safe place to go and take a break from everything. And remember, even super friendly dogs might get startled by some costumes that might show up at the door. They might react in an unexpected manner. Always make sure they aren't able to bolt out the door. If you take your dog out trick or treating, remember they might be nervous of some of the strange creatures out and about. Give them space and if they seem stressed, take them home. Unless you know your neighbors will be happy to see your dog, don't bring them up to someone's door.
