Ill let a 1 minute grok rebuttal #FactCheckKotek
A Lonza groundbreaking is a real event. Using it as proof that Oregon’s business climate is fixed, or that Kotek reversed the slide, is the political move.
What the photo-op is
Kotek showed up in Bend, announced $1.6 million from the Governor’s Strategic Reserve Fund, and tied the project to HB 4084 / her Prosperity Roadmap. Lonza is adding about 80 permanent jobs (plus temporary construction), with the plant not due until 2029. That is a retention win for an existing Bend site—not a new company choosing Oregon from a blank map.
What the meme leaves out
Since she took office in January 2023, the public record is not “businesses flooding in.” It is:
HQ or growth leaving: Dutch Bros (Arizona), Tektronix (North Carolina), Jeld-Wen HQ already gone, Bowtech to Texas
Plants shutting or moving production: Daimler Portland manufacturing (375–387 jobs), Campbell/Pacific Foods Tualatin (330), Owens Corning Prineville (184), Keen factory, Nordic Veneer, plus a string of mills (Malheur, C&D, Hampton Banks, Interfor Philomath, Woodgrain Pilot Rock, etc.)
Full collapse: Rogue Ales Chapter 7
Statewide: closures outnumbered openings by 1,700 in 2024 and 6,000 in the first nine months of 2025
State’s own work: of firms contacted by out-of-state recruiters, 68% expanded or moved some operations elsewhere, citing taxes, regulation, and climate—not a shortage of ribbon-cuttings
Eighty Lonza jobs do not offset that. Construction jobs in 2026–2029 also are not the same as a durable private payroll.
Where the “game” is
She is selling a small, subsidized expansion as the story of Oregon’s economy while the larger pattern is leakage and shutdowns. Meeting Lonza at BIO and then standing at a shovel site is standard credit-claiming. It does not answer why recruiters from Texas, Arizona, and the Carolinas keep winning Oregon firms’ next building.
Fair limit
Not every closure is “because Kotek.” Mills cite wood supply and markets; Daimler called it a network decision; Dutch Bros cited airports and growth markets. The rebuttal is not “she personally killed every shop.” It is: do not let an 80-job, $1.6 million announcement erase a multi-year record of exits, mill deaths, and net establishment loss.
One-line version
Kotek is posing with 80 Lonza jobs and a state check. Oregon has been losing headquarters, factories, and more businesses than it opens. That is a press event, not a turnaround.
Swiss company Lonza is expanding in Bend, bringing new jobs and growing its work to develop and manufacture medicines that can change lives. Hear from Jonas Brunschwig, Consul General of Switzerland in San Francisco, on what this investment means.
