Featuring a flat-topped summit of the more resistant Blue Gate Member sandstone (a fine-grained, cross-bedded unit up to 100 feet thick) that caps steep, intricately rilled slopes of the softer, bluish-gray Blue Gate Shale Member, creating dramatic vertical cliffs, gullies, and barren, plant-hostile terrain amid eroded spires and moonscape-like outcrops. This striking butte formed through differential erosion over millions of years, beginning with the deposition of the Mancos Shale in the shallow, sediment-choked inland sea during the Late Cretaceous. Subsequent tectonic uplift during the Laramide Orogeny (around 70–40 million years ago) elevated the Colorado Plateau, exposing the layers to arid weathering and fluvial incision, where wind, rain, and freeze-thaw cycles rapidly eroded the less resistant shales and mudstones surrounding the butte. While the durable caprock shielded its core, progressively isolating the resistant mass into its current prominent, factory-resembling silhouette.
