The Riddah Wars expose one of the ugliest facts about early Islam: the moment Muhammad died, large portions of Arabia walked away from Medina.
Muslims like to pretend Islam spread because everyone recognized Muhammad as the obvious final prophet. But history tells a much more embarrassing story. After Muhammad died, tens of thousands of people did not behave like people convinced that the final messenger of God had just completed the final revelation. They behaved like people whose loyalty had been tied to Muhammad personally, politically, tribally, or financially.
Once he was gone, they left.
And here is the key point: many of these people were not “unreligious.” They were not secular skeptics. They did not simply become atheists. Some followed other prophets. Some accepted rival revelations. Some refused to send zakat to Abu Bakr, the 1st Caliph after Muhammad's death, because they believed their arrangement had been with Muhammad, not with the new political regime in Medina. Others broke away from Islam’s control entirely.
