A lot happened at @SonicLabs since June 19th and we finally see some positive progress, the community waited so long for. โฌ๏ธ
1. Leadship update
- Former board members Michael Kong, Andre Cronje, and David Richardson resigned, but remain advisors.
- New leadership: @MattVisser (CEO) and Kosta Kourkoumelis (COO), focused on operational discipline and rebuilding trust.
- New approach: Get 1% better every day and let it compound, no instant turnaround promised.
- Commitments: Transparent governance, dedicated risk/compliance function, treat sonic-3:native holders as stakeholders incl. clear communication.
- Tech progress continued: 400+ PRs merged, releases shipped, v2.2.0 in development and private testnet already live.
2. The first 1%
- Fantom Opera extended to at least the end of 2026 with ongoing bridge funding as a direct response to community feedback.
- New transparency: Detailed backgrounds shared for CEO and COO; moving away from generic โcontributorโ labels.
- Started unblocking accounts. Criticism is welcome if respectful.
- Plans for more public engagement (fireside chats, meet the team sessions, town halls) and ongoing small updates.
3. Mint update
- Didn't mint the annual 47,625,000 sonic-3:native allocation this year.
- Working towards permanently stopping supply inflation as soon as a way for sustainable funding for validator rewards without new issuance is found.
- Decision made in direct response to community feedback on inflation.
4. Marketing update
- Shift to ROI-focused marketing: prioritize strategic partnerships and integrations that bring real users and builders.
- Keep effective trending content and reduce giveaway-style campaigns (short-term noise only).
- World Cup challenge continues, but similar gimmick campaigns will take a back seat.
- Goal: More substance and lasting value instead of temporary hype.
- Continues welcoming honest feedback and unblocking critics.
Although the initial leadership update faced heavy skepticism, which is totally understandable after the last disaster, the whole sentiment seems to shift right now. Doomsday is followed by cautious optimism and it feels like Matt Visser is finally someone, who approaches things with transparency, commitment, communication and most important, with a sense for the community. Sonic's tech stack was always incredible strong, has a super smooth UI and big updates are just around the corner. Sonic is rebuilding the right way now - choosing small improvements at a time over hype.๐ค
