#FatherGoose (1964) : A non-Disney #SwissFamilyRobinson but presented in rom-com and war-comedy formats. Cary Grant and Leslie Caron headline a film that echoes the charm of Disney’s "Swiss Family Robinson," yet it ventures into its own territory with some notable twists. Firstly, the war zone setting—this film unfolds entirely during wartime, and that’s the catalyst that brings the characters together. However, it treats the seriousness of war with a surprisingly light-hearted tone, leaning more into comedy than conflict. Secondly, this isn’t a ready-made family. The characters begin as strangers and gradually bond, evolving into a makeshift family unit. Grant plays Walter, a former teacher sent to a remote island on a coding mission. He unexpectedly ends up with Freneau (Caron) and seven young girls, all stranded and needing his care as Japanese patrols threaten the island. With help uncertain, the film follows Walter’s reluctant transformation as he adapts to life with these eight females. What starts off as mutual annoyance slowly turns into camaraderie and affection—especially between Walter and Freneau. The dynamic is amusing, with memorable moments like a young girl’s innocent crush on Walter turning awkward and hilarious. “Lady, you are making a powerful enemy,” is possibly the film’s funniest line. The snake scene is another comedic gem. These moments keep the film engaging and breezy. Though the runtime feels around 10 minutes too long, it’s hardly a concern if you’re enjoying the journey. Cary Grant may not exude the same old-school charisma in the '60s as he did earlier, but his seasoned performance still works. Leslie Caron is sweet, and the seven girls bring warmth and fun.
