Transparency with Calgary city council has been sorely lacking for a long time. It is a relief to see some councilors sharing the information.
Some members of #yyccc have been spreading misinformation about the savings proposed in this year’s budget, so let's clear the air.
➡️ What we didn’t do:
We never proposed cutting funding for mental health or the low-income transit pass. Instead, we called on the Province to step up and help fund these critical services while ensuring The City continues to support them.
✅ Reductions we did propose:
• Executive Leadership: $2.5M
• Corporate Management travel, hosting, meals 50% reduction: Minimum $1.39M (travel alone)
• Tax shift reduction (0.5%): $12M in relief for homeowners
• Transit-oriented development studies: $24.5M
• Secondary suite incentives: $10M
• Tax rebate: $24M in relief for homeowners
• Cowboys Park capital upgrade: $4.1M
That is about $54-$78 million, depending on tax shift decisions, and doesn't even include the massive debt cancellation for our proposal to cancel electric buses.
Could we have pushed deeper into the organization to find more savings? Absolutely. But the majority of Council rejected even these practical, common-sense reductions, making it clear that more ambitious proposals wouldn’t have gained support this year. It wasn’t worth bringing forward more efficiencies when even these straightforward ideas were dismissed.
Transparency matters. Accountability matters. Calgarians deserve a City government that prioritizes relief and responsible spending—and I’ll keep fighting to make that happen.
