Laura performs three songs: “Helpless,” “So Lost Without Your Love,” and “Lonely Nights,” all produced by David Kershenbaum. “So Lost Without Your Love” was co‑written by Michael Bolton, whose songs appear throughout her career.

#FilmSongs 🎬🎶 #Video This time in 1986, Laura spent months in Australia shooting the film BACKSTAGE in which she played the lead role of Kate Lawrence, an American pop singer who sought a career as an actress and was cast in the lead role of an Australian theatre production. Laura also served as music consultant for BACKSTAGE. Due to ongoing production issues, the film was not released until 1988, seeing release in Australia only, and then it went straight to home video internationally.
Laura performs three songs in the film - "Helpless," "So Lost Without Your Love," and "Lonely Nights" - all of which were produced by David Kershenbaum, who also was lead producer for Laura's 1987 studio album TOUCH. Interestingly, "So Lost Without Your Love" was co-written by Michael Bolton, who wrote multiple songs that Laura recorded throughout her career, most notably her #1 Billboard Adult Contemporary hit "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You."
BACKSTAGE begins with Laura's character Kate performing "Helpless" onstage. Later in the film, Kate sings "So Lost Without Your Love" for a bar audience, but especially to her love interest Robert Landau who's in the room. There is a cameo appearance by the late Greg Ham from the Australian band Men at Work, as he plays a member of Laura's backing band for the song. The film closes with Kate performing "Lonely Nights." The song starts during a theatrical performance of "The Seagull," as Kate sits in her dressing room. Once back onstage, she picks up the song again, and it plays through the closing credits. All three of these film tracks are emotion-driven and full of angst, making them a perfect "fit" for Laura. Unfortunately, there was no soundtrack released for BACKSTAGE.
