Jodi, We realize that kids have access to inappropriate and harmful content on digital devices. That's a problem. In Texas, we already passed strict age verification for online pornography. We are working on other solutions that further protect children from the harmful content on the internet, accessed by digital devices. However, this problem does not justify giving children unfettered access to pornographic, sexually explicit, vulgar, and educationally unsuitable content in their schools. Schools must have suitability standards, including in their libraries. The READER Act mandated the first ever standards for public school libraries in the state of Texas and they have been upheld by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. Prior to this law, public school libraries did not have standards, just recommended guidelines The only matetials being removed from Texas public schools are sexually explicit, pervasively vulgar, or educationally unsuitable. Your books aren't banned in Texas, but some of them don't meet the suitability standards required in our laws. We will continue to strengthen the law to protect children from predatory behavior, including adults who knowingly distribute sexually explicit content to kids. We already know of at least one Texas vendor who knowingly sold adult content to a middle school. That should be criminal.
