We’ve just wrapped up the first year of the Master course in #FinanceAndDevelopment at @Unibocconi – and it has been truly fantastic. Over the past months, we’ve had a great time exploring many fascinating settings, topics and papers: from #banking and #capitalmarkets to #paymentsystems, #developmentfinanceinstitutions, and beyond. Together, we thought hard about the sources of market imperfections that hold back financial markets in low and middle-income countries – and how to design financial systems that truly promote growth and development. In the final part of the course, we turned the classroom into a policy lab. Students acted as the Economic Council of the #RepublicofPanettone, a fictional lower-middle-income country preparing an @IMFNews-supported reform program – building full policy proposals, macro frameworks, and loan requests under realistic constraints. And then we went one step further. Together with my outstanding TA, #SelenEski, we designed an “AI-IMF” to bring #AIinClass to read, evaluate, and even negotiate on the students’ proposals – turning the final part of the course into a live experiment in using #AI as a #policynegotiator and evaluator in the classroom. Students had to “train” and interact with AI as if it were sitting on the other side of the table in a real-life policy negotiation. How did it go? #MixedReviews Pros of this experiment: #Fun – the energy and engagement in the room were remarkable. #Topical – students learned how to shape and guide AI as a negotiator, a skill that will be increasingly relevant in real-world finance and policy work. #EmpoweringTalent – many produced very strong, innovative proposals and ideas. But we also learned a lot about the #LimitsofAI: #TooKind – almost all evaluations were above 80%. #NoMoralView – projects with questionable or outright immoral elements (e.g. gambling-based proposals) were not penalized. #TheoreticalLimits – some proposals featuring financial repression or policies that would destroy credit markets were not flagged as problematic. So overall, this was a frontier experience – and a clear reminder that there is much more we can and should do with #AIInClass, especially in innovative courses like this. I’m deeply proud of what our students achieved, and grateful to be part of a community at @Unibocconi that is willing to experiment, rethink how we teach finance, and prepare the next generation to use both markets and technology wisely and responsibly. In the final part of the course, we turned the classroom into a policy lab. Pros of this experiment:
#Fun – the energy and engagement in the room were remarkable.
#Topical – students learned how to shape and guide AI as a negotiator, a skill that will be increasingly relevant in real-world finance and policy work.
#EmpoweringTalent – many produced very strong, innovative proposals and ideas.

But we also learned a lot about the #LimitsofAI:

#TooKind – almost all evaluations were above 80%.
