Bronze head of Claudius/Nero (argue away!) from the River Alde, photographed at auction in 1965 (a snip at Β£15,500), now in the BM. A good contender as Boudican war loot from Camulodunum. I tell the story of this remarkable artefact in Echolands.

The image of #Nero from Fishbourne @romanpalace had been decapitated with many strikes to the face
This reflects the damnatio memoriae inflicted on #Nero portraits following his death in AD 68, assailants directing anger to the nose and eyes
#FindingNero 12
Images of #Nero, imperial heir apparent, were created to disseminate throughout the Roman empire in AD 50
The example from Fishbourne @romanpalace @sussex_society was probably a full figure portrait like these. It would have stood in the so called 'proto palace'
#FindingNero 11
The portrait of 'a youthβ from Fishbourne @romanpalace matches the physiognomy recorded in the earliest portrait types of #Nero, created at, or shortly after, formal adoption by #Claudius in AD 50 when he was still only 13
#FindingNero 10
The 3D scan of the Fishbourne @romanpalace portrait by @bournemouthuni shows how well it compares with features of the young Nero on display in museums like the MusΓ©e du Louvre in Paris, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Museo Nazionale di AntichitΓ in Parma
#FindingNero 9
The top half of the @romanpalace marble head is flattened and the surface slightly dimpled
It seems the top had been carved as a separate piece, fitted later, possibly because of a shortage of marble at the time of manufacture
#FindingNero 8
Facial features are crisply defined with a small and well-rounded chin. The coiffure is well defined
Traces of head attire, a laurel wreath or crown also survive
By the mid-1st century AD the wearing of such items had become an imperial prerogative
#FindingNero 7
The #Roman marble portrait from Fishbourne @romanpalace is badly damaged, with only the right side of the face surviving today
The head had been removed from the body with some force, probably with an axe, substantial blows further fragmenting the image
#FindingNero 6

#FindingNero 5
When found, the marble head from Fishbourne @romanpalace was thought to be a portrait of a Romano British aristocrat
Possibly King Tiberius Claudius Togidubnus noted on an inscription in Chichester
Or Tiberius Claudius Catuarus whose gold ring was found nearby
#FindingNero 4
The damaged marble head @romanpalace was one of a number of architectural and artistic pieces from the so-called βproto-palaceβ, a mid-1st c AD Mediterranean-style house on the Sussex coast
This is the earliest private Roman house to be found in Britain
