The governor’s office published the proclamation and a related announcement. The text says she proclaimed January 2026 as Muslim American Heritage Month “in the Empire State,” citing Muslim contributions and New York’s Muslim population (described in the proclamation as close to about 1 million, the largest in the U.S.). Landmarks illuminated green included One World Trade Center, the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, and the Kosciuszko Bridge. Hochul’s statement framed it as recognizing “the values, faith and traditions of our Muslim American communities” and protecting them from Islamophobia. The move came the day after Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as New York City’s first Muslim mayor. It is a ceremonial gubernatorial proclamation for that month, not a statute permanently renaming January.
