Some European newspapers, obviously out of #TrumpHatred, are commemorating the 80th anniversary of #Hiroshima.
On August 6, 1945, the Americans dropped the #FirstAtomicBomb. Around 200,000 dead.
The perfidious question is: why did they do it if the war was already won?
I'll tell you right away why they did it: because before reaching #Tokyo, the #Americans would have suffered at least another half a million deaths.
They should have conquered #Japan, island by island.
I was in #Okinawa at a #G7Summit. I saw the caves where the #Japanese had barricaded themselves before committing mass suicide.
#16500Marines died. #36000Wounded in the conquest of Okinawa alone. 7,000 and 16,000 were wounded in #IwoJima.
Yet even after Hiroshima, Japan didn't surrender. It took a second atomic bomb, two days later, on #Nagasaki.
So the #WarInThePacific was far from won before Hiroshima.
Nor was #Truman's terrible decision motivated by the cynical calculation of frightening #Stalin, as left-wing parties in #Europe still maintain.
