A couple of days ago there was a Space for my favorite movie podcast #FirstDayLastShow. I was there in the audience for almost an hour. As @sourabhsanyal da always says about me, “yeh hamesha neeche rehte hai uppar nahi aate.” The Space runtime itself felt like Dhurandhar movie. And the panelists were Dhurandhar in their views and understanding of cinema. @vmanjunath was the EmCee of the Space. (Being a Punjabi, had to write the right word. MC can get confusing.) At the start, Manju bhai asked a simple question. “What does watching a movie mean to you?” The shortest answer I can think of is that a movie teleports me to another world. My first movie in a theatre was Zindagi ek Jua. When I walked out, I remember wondering what was this experience. Who are these characters? Their stories and lives? Over time, as I understood movies better, that feeling of teleportation only grew stronger. For a few hours, real life disappears. It becomes only about the characters on screen. Good/bad/toxic. Filtering which message goes home. Just watching the story unfold. Maybe that’s why movie dialogues and moments keep slipping into real-life conversations later. Those references always stay. Lately, that feeling has extended into watching movies with my daughter. We talk about what she liked, what she didn’t, what she understood and what went over her head. Sometimes her take surprises me more than the film itself. Over the years on this app I've made great friends who converse on movies and other aspects like @midwicketpunch and @FarziLogic (farzi is incredible) Recently met this 👇🏻legend and he keeps surprising me @visheshkoul is someone I can never fit into one domain. Every time I think in this conversation he is the best at this, he surprises me somewhere else. (just read his writings on Insta and boy another surprise). His knowledge is honestly incredible and I say this with complete humility and respect. Maybe this post feels like a shoutout to @faahil and @saqiba for creating this community. And it probably is. For trying to bring back conversations around movies for their craft. Their flaws. Things that didn’t look visible at the time. Whether those stories and characters still hold relevance today. Especially in a time where movies are judged only by box office numbers and not by what they made you feel. Also, a slightly strange realisation. My wife and younger daughter are in Delhi. I’m in Bangalore with my elder daughter. Is this how the biggest 90s kids horror movie found its origin story. Baghban.
