Happy DC Emancipation Day! #FirstFreed
On April 16, 1862, nine months before the Emancipation Proclamation, President Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act, making the _____ enslaved Black Americans in DC the nation’s #FirstFreed. #DCEmancipationDay
Incredible. A key time to mention that the D.C. Compensated Emancipation Act paid slavers in the nation’s capital to free 3,000 enslaved Black people — 8 months before the Emancipation Proclamation. Descendants of America’s #FirstFreed should be first in line for these benefits.
Councilmember McDuffie, re-introduced the Reparations Foundation Fund and Task Force Establishment Act of 2023. The legislation would establish a 9-member task force to study and develop reparations proposals for African Americans in the District of Columbia.

It’s #DCEmancipationDay. As we honor the nation’s #FirstFreed, we’re reminded how far we have to go to fulfill the promise of emancipation for all. Equal access to the vote, housing, jobs, education & healthcare are still dreams deferred — but ones we’ll achieve together.

Today is #DCEmancipationDay. On April 16 1862, 3,100 enslaved Black citizens were freed by act of Congress in DC — 8 months before the Emancipation Proclamation. While Black DC residents gained distinction as the nation’s #FirstFreed, our long walk to freedom is still unfinished.
On #EmancipationDay, we remember the 3100 #FirstFreed enslaved persons of the District, 9 months before the Emancipation Proclamation. However, today & everyday, we must acknowledge that the 700k Americans in DC still aren’t fully free. #TaxationWithoutRepresentation #DCStatehood
