“You have been weighed in the balance and found wanting.” (Dan 5:27, RSV-CE)
In today’s #FirstReading, Daniel teaches that when the sacred is profaned, judgment is never far behind. His warning reaches us in an age that ridicules holy things: stand fast in fidelity, uphold what belongs to God, shun the easy path of compromise, and give worship to the King of Kings alone.
When Belshazzar desecrates the consecrated vessels, the Lord Himself writes his sentence upon the wall—a judgment that only Daniel, steadfast, uncorrupted, and free of worldly favor, is worthy to interpret.
The lesson endures for every age: God’s holiness demands reverence and will be measured not by human applause but by obedience, purity of worship, and fidelity to revealed truth.
Saint Leonard of Port Maurice, who bent the hearts of many obstinate sinners to penance, pray for us.

"Heart of Jesus, House of God and Gate of Heaven, have mercy on those who wander far from Thy fold."

“Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.” (Rom 13: 8)
In today’s #FirstReading, St. Paul names the one debt no Christian can repay: the obligation to love. But not the counterfeit love of emotional preference emptied of moral content. Authentic Christian love never affirms sin or error; it wills the true good of the other, rooted in objective truth.
To fulfill the law by love is to conform the will to God’s—chaste, honest, self-giving, and sacrificial.
This passage condemns both libertinism, which denies truth in the name of love, and legalism, which denies love in the name of truth. Catholic charity unites both.
So too our Catholic families, parishes, and institutions must model this charity—not by indulgence, but by formation—teaching that love “does no wrong to the neighbor” (v. 10), which includes refusing to cooperate in moral falsehood or to baptize sin under the name of compassion.

"Heart of Jesus, House of God and Gate of Heaven, have mercy on those who wander far from Thy fold."

“I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.” (Rom 9:2)
In today’s #FirstReading, St. Paul grieves that many of his kinsmen reject Christ. His anguish reveals the heart of the Redeemer living within him -- a suffering born of love for those who turn away from the Messiah who fulfilled their own covenants.
The Apostle’s lament exposes the tragic possibility of resisting grace through presumption. As Israel’s story shows again and again, privilege does not guarantee fidelity.
To imitate Paul is to carry within us a burning desire that the world might recognize Christ “who is God over all, blessed forever.” The Church must therefore weep for those estranged from faith -- not in judgment, but in longing that all may come to know the Lord who saves.
To preserve our identity as Catholic families, parishes, and institutions, we must cherish our election as mission, not privilege, and bear within us the same redemptive anguish of the Apostle.

"Heart of Jesus, House of God and Gate of Heaven, have mercy on those who wander far from Thy fold."

Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made.
— Romans 1:20

“Through him we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith.” (Romans 1:5)
In today’s #FirstReading, Paul begins his letter to the Romans with a declaration of identity and mission: “Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God.” That -- before even the pleasantries of a greeting!
Paul’s self-identification as a slave of Christ Jesus stands in sharp contrast to the modern impulse toward self-invention. Servire Deo regnare est, to serve God is to reign, echoes centuries of Christian piety. The obedience of faith liberates rather than enslaves, for it unites the will of the creature with the love of the Creator.
Authentic Catholic identity begins in docility to truth and ends in sanctity. It shines in Paul’s humility: a servant of Christ, set apart for His Gospel, not his own agenda.

"Heart of Jesus, House of God and Gate of Heaven, have mercy on those who wander far from Thy fold."

Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy mountain!” (Joel 2:1)
In today’s #FirstReading, Joel calls priests and people to lament, fast, and cry to the Lord. A devastating plague has stripped the land bare. But behind the locusts marches a greater host -- the Lord’s own host. No random disaster, the day of the LORD! It is He Himself moving through creation to awaken His people.
The prophet sees how sin dissolves worship and even creation groans in consequence -- fields scorched, herds moaning, the earth trembling. Yet God’s judgment is medicinal. He wounds to heal, chastises to restore.
When His altar stands silent, the world decays. When praise and thanksgiving return with joyful hearts, grace renews both soul and soil.
Catholic families, parishes, and institutions “blow the trumpet!” Let us call one another from complacency to contrition, from neglect to fidelity -- heeding His call, “Return to Me with all your heart.”

“Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and Thou didst hear my voice.” Jon 2:2
In today’s #FirstReading, Jonah flees God’s call -- only to learn that there is no fleeing the LORD’s call. Rather than go to Nineveh to “cry against it,” he sets out for Tarshish -- the farthest point west of the known world. Jonah doesn’t merely ignore the summons; he runs as far from the LORD as humanly possible.
Tossed into the deep with his guilt to calm the sea, Jonah begins his road of return. The storm that terrifies the pagans leads them to faith, while the prophet finds renewal in repentance.
Jonah’s three days in the “great fish” are like our own times of darkness -- yet they can become wombs of rebirth when we turn again to the LORD. For Catholic parishes, families, and institutions adrift in worldly seas, the path home begins the same way -- by crying from the depths, “Salvation belongs to the LORD!”
Saint Bruno, model of silent contemplation and steadfast fidelity, pray for us.

“Righteousness belongs to the Lord our God, but confusion of face, as at this day, to us” (Bar 1:15)
In today’s #FirstReading, the Jewish exiles recognize their sins and confess them communally before God, acknowledging that the calamities that befell them were just punishments.
No one else is to blame. Their shared shame is the fruit of their shared sin.
Individual sins implicated the whole people. So too with our Catholic families, parishes, and institutions: we may be tempted to blame outside pressures for decline, when the deepest wounds often come from within.
Baruch shows the way back: humble confession, honest repentance, and renewed fidelity to the covenant. The Church’s glory is Christ’s abiding presence in the Eucharist. Renewal begins on our knees.

"O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift my face to you.” (Ezra 9:6)
In today’s #FirstReading, Ezra kneels in confession for himself and the sins of God’s people.
Ezra’s posture—tearing his garments, falling to his knees, spreading out his hands—reveals that authentic reform begins in repentance, not in pride or institutional maneuvering. He stands in solidarity with the sins of the people (“our iniquities,” “our guilt”), even though he is not personally guilty.
And yet Ezra remembers God’s mercy: “a remnant has escaped… a peg in His holy place.” Even in the midst of infidelity, God anchors His people in holiness.
Renewal begins on our knees. And at the same time, Ezra’s prayer reveals that we are not paralyzed by past mistakes. A remnant remains—in our Catholic families, parishes, and institutions. God has given us a foothold in holiness.

“There is great gain in godliness with contentment; for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.” (1 Tim 6:6–7)
In today’s #FirstReading (1 Tim 6:2c–12), Paul warns against false teachers who twist faith into a tool for profit. Their pride breeds envy and strife, while their attachment to riches blinds them to truth.
Not money but the love of money is “the root of all evils” which ruins lives and destroys faith.
The disciple’s task is to “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.” This is the way to “fight the good fight of faith” and lay hold of eternal life.
In an age of ambition and self-promotion—even within the Church and our Catholic institutions—we are called back to simplicity, fidelity, and holiness.

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”
In today’s #FirstReading, Paul does not boast of strength but of weakness redeemed. His authority rests not on power or prestige, but on God's mercy. This is the mark of authentic mission: humility before grace.
Mercy transforms—persecutors into apostles, institutions adrift into witnesses of faith, hearts of stone into vessels of hope.
Too many Catholic institutions have lost credibility in their prideful pursuits—which, no matter how far gone, won't be restored by clever programs that boost rankings or marketing gloss. Credibility for Catholic institutions comes only through true Christian leaders and faithful communities unafraid to confess that Christ has shown His "perfect patience" in me.

In today’s #FirstReading, the so-called Christ Hymn, Paul proclaims to the faithful in Colossae that Jesus is the image of the invisible God—the one in whom all things hold together. He is not one voice among many; He is the center of creation, the head of the Church, the firstborn from the dead.
Christ Jesus is not merely an “option” to be prioritized. To make Him so is to unravel the truth John declares so beautifully in his Last Gospel: “All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.” By His Cross, our Savior reconciles all things to Himself, making peace that endures through His blood.
If all things are created through Him, then all things must be ordered to Him. Our evangelical call is not merely to accompany or affirm people in their sin, but to lead them to Christ—the Way, the Truth, and the Life. And we should hope for the same in return.
In our lives, in the Church, and in our Catholic institutions, our gaze must be fixed on Him alone. To trade even a trace of His dominion for worldly prestige is to lose the center of all.
May our worship, our witness, and our work proclaim with one voice: Christ is truly King of All.

In today’s #FirstReading, the LORD institutes the Jubilee—a sacred time of rest, release, and return. Land is restored. Debts are forgiven. Slaves are set free. It is a sort of divine reset that reorders society rightly.
Today, academia—like much of secular culture—is driven by thirst for the wrong thing and in dire need of a Jubilee. Religious and secular institutions alike jostle to stand out among their peers, too ready to trade mission for margin and self-promotion.
But the Jubilee calls us back. It reminds us that we do not own time, truth, or talent. These are gifts entrusted to our stewardship by God that require:
-Letting go of manmade rivalries
-Returning to trust in God's providence
-Remembering who we are in covenant with the LORD.
Only the heart that returns to the LORD can truly rest and only the soul freed from self-assertion can receive an inheritance that endures.
Let us live a Jubilee of the heart—rejecting the cult of prestige, and returning to the sacred rhythms of mercy, reverence, and right order.
