In #Scotland the 1st person to enter the house after midnight on #NewYearsEve is said to affect the fortune of the house. They should come bearing gifts & be a dark-haired male.

When I was a child my parents practiced a form of #firstfooting on #newyearseve. We aren't Scottish or have Scottish heritage but it was definitely a thing that my family and neighbours understood. Anyone else remember this?

Revellers can sit, clink glasses and let the new year wash over them.
Or they can do what they do in Denmark, which is stand on a chair and "leap" into January at midnight.
The effort is rewarded, since it's supposed to be bad luck if you forget.

We all do it a bit differently, but if like me you rushed out the house at two minutes to midnight with a piece of coal, then you are keeping a great North East tradition alive. Here's to #FirstFooting and wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2024!
Been thrown oot the hoose by my maw and told not to come back until next year!

Just discovered #HistFicXmas! A8. Any unusual Christmas or winter customs in my books? YES!
I loved using #FirstFooting as a chance to set twists in the story, when spirits are high and people might be more open to outsiders...
Anyone in the market for some discounted meat products?
