The collapse of a ₱200 million flood control project in Barangay Mulawin, Naujan—barely a year after its construction—is not just a structural failure. It is a moral and institutional breakdown. Governor Humerlito “Bonz” Dolor’s inspection revealed a dike filled mostly with sand, supported by thin concrete and undersized steel bars. “My little finger is thicker than the iron used,” he said, visibly shaken by the substandard work. His frustration is justified. His call for action is urgent. But this is not just a DPWH issue. It is a leadership issue. The survival of Oriental Mindoro depends on the collective will of its elected officials—governor, congressmen, mayors, and barangay leaders—to act decisively. If we continue to treat flood control as a transactional project rather than a life-saving infrastructure, our beloved province risks extinction. Senator Ping Lacson has exposed the systemic “passing through” modus in flood control contracts, where up to 60% of project funds are lost to commissions, shortcuts, and corruption. This is not unique to Mindoro—but Mindoro is now paying the price. We must demand: • Independent investigation by COA and the Office of the Ombudsman—not just political probes • Blacklisting of erring contractors, as ordered by President Marcos • Transparent publication of project specs, costs, and contractors • Urgent redesign and reconstruction of failed structures with community oversight It’s time for all public officials to ask themselves: Are we still relevant? Are we still serving the people—or merely surviving politics? The people of Oriental Mindoro deserve more than apologies and inspections. They deserve protection, dignity, and leadership with integrity. Let this be the turning point.
