On the morning of Dec 14th, 1971, six Sabres attacked Srinagar airport. Only two Gnat fighters had time to take off, and one lost visual contact after gaining height. The other, flown by Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon took on all the Sabres, hitting at least two before he was shot down. Pakistani pilot Kaiser Tufail's account of the battle describes how they were astonished how long he kept battling them alone & that he was 'a hard nut to crack.' They found his body at Badgam, very close to where India's first PVC awardee Major Somnath Sharma lost his life in 1947 defending the valley.Sekhon was posthumously awarded the nation's highest military honour. It's the IAF's 1st & only Param Vir Chakra awardee, Nirmaljit Singh Sekhon's 80th birth anniversary today. Thirty years after the war, the officers of Halwara Air Force base in Punjab still regularly looked in on his father, retired serviceman Tarlochan Singh Sekhon in Issewal, and provided medical help and other support. The Indian armed forces look after their own!

All the three Vice Chiefs of the Indian Armed Forces took to the skies at Air Force Station Jodhpur in the indigenous #Tejas fighter jets of "Flying Bullets", the Param Veer Chakra awardee Sqn, during #ExTarangShakti24. The Integrated flying was led by Vice Chief of IAF, Air Marshal AP Singh, who piloted the single-seater LCA Tejas, while the @adgpi and @IndiannavyMedia Vice Chiefs flew in the twin-seater variant. This is a significant marker for India's self-reliant defence capabilities, and is a proud moment for #MakeInIndia #IndianAirForce #IndianArmy #IndianNavy #IndianArmedForces #AtmanirbharBharat

In its final avatar, the single-seat #Tejas #Mk1 multirole light fighter was delivered in 2016 to the #No45sqn #IAF in IOC standard and in FOC standard to the #No18sqn #FlyingBullets #IAF in May 2020 thus beginning active service of this long-drawn project #IndiaAviation #HAL

Similar incident back in 0'3/04 (need to check exact year), evening ground run scheduled on one #MiG27 of No.18 Sqn #FlyingBullets Kalaikunda airbase in WB - massive fire reported, entire airframe lost if I remember correctly. Crew safe cc @anshumig you were there @zone5aviation
