For #FontsOnFriday, the lovely #font & #fontcover at Newcastle St Nicholas. It's 15th c: the cover seems wonky now due to thr tower shifting over time.

Bramford, St Mary, Suffolk #FontCover bulging, spiral columns perhaps reflect those once at the main altar at Old St Peter’s, Rome, reputedly from Solomon’s Temple. Their link to Christ was through the descent of King David and his son, the wise Solomon.

#FontOnFriday #FontCover #FerrousFriday St Katharinenkirche, Brandenburg an der Havel
Bronze font, by Dietrich Molner of Erfurt, 1440. Note Pelican feeding her young at top & spiky and curling crockets

#FontsOnFriday #FontCover Framlingham, St. Michael, Suffolk. C15 octagonal pyramid w finial composed of acorns and swirling crockets, each of row which is slightly different from the next. Note trace of polychromy in the last image.

No English medieval #FontCover lock survives. The parish chests, in contrast, had (beginning in the C12) edicts requiring 3 independent locks to deter theft. By not requiring the same for #FontCover reflects the lack of urgency. Modern spoon "lock" Terrington, Norfolk /🧵

#FontCover Westwood, St Mary, Wiltshire stands near a demon adorning a flat corbel nearby . A faded inscription reads “resist me and I will flee," appropriate for baptism which includes a short exorcism. The cover also recalls the turret of the nearby tower staircase.

#FontsOnFriday Smethcott, St Michael and All Angels, Shropshire Oval font (Anglo Saxon?) with later wooden lid (note staple at right). The simplicity of the #FontCover lets one know that the marvelous extravaganzas were a choice, not a requirement. Ufford, St Mary, Suffolk.

Forgot about this. Visited Newcastle, St Andrew to see their fabulous #FontCover Had to wait for service to be over— noticed a v patient parishioner #CuteDog

Is anyone near Fittleworth, St. Mary, Sussex? I am in need of a better photograph of a #FontCover than the images below. I am happy to cover costs.

#Fontsonfriday Reuse of earlier #FontCover parts on later #FontCovers perhaps an amuletic power transferred between blessed water could turn a font cover into a secondary relic or an heirloom factor with some people feeling respect for older pieces as part of local heritage.

@DavidWiddick @HistoryMalc Trunch canopy is painted to look like stone & the old wood now is almost as tough as cast iron. The 2nd #FontCover is Trent, Dorset & the 3rd is Ticehurst, Sussex--a glorious survival!
#AmWriting Finally done, w a maximum of whining. !20+ individual entries; 463 pages, 154 pages of illustration/bibliography, so 309 single-spaced pages. Will still need to proof, etc. Whew. OK, onto the entries on #FontCover fragments, rumored, & plain covers, & lifts. V. happy

Like an idiot, I predicted being done today. Then I discovered I had NOT written a major entry which I thought finished. Weirdly, it is on Ufford, Suffolk, the #FontCover that started my obsession. It took hours to clean up my random notes. Bonus Pic of my lovely cat Ufford 🥰

#AmWriting Goal in sight--10 more entries to go. The Great Useless Appendix of #FontCovers is clocking in at 415 pages so far (with 100+ pages of illustrations) Text is single-spaced but 1/3 of that is bibliography. It's a LOT, but 1st draft will be done by tomorrow. 🎆🥳

Small #FontCover discovery. Llanfair, Kilgeddin, Gwent, St. Mary, Wales has a scallop shell, a symbol of a pilgrim’s journey towards salvation, was also linked w rebirth & resurrection. The scallop shell is often seen on pilgrim souvenirs many which carried holy water = baptism

#FontsOnFriday Although the shape of the C15/early C16 #FontCover at Monks Silver, All Saints, Somerset is fairly common, the exuberant carving is not. I love the wildness of the finial & the fleur-de-lys crockets in ultra-high relief.

Working on #FontCover entries. the majority are octagonal pyramids with foliated, crocketed ribs and a leafy finial. Intriguing, all differ from one another. I think faces were once painted w scenes/figures, like these later C17 examples (last 2). 73 left, but who's counting 😄

W the wonderful assistance of @barry_wizard w a source, I now realize that it is likely an entirely Victorian piece based on the #FontCover at Littlebury, Essex. I had noted the resemblance before, but close examination pins it down. Still, how did it end p in Somerset?

#FontCover Assistance -- does anyone have photographs of the font cover in the churchyard of Charlton Mackrell, St. Mary, Somerset? I only have one, but would love more, especially any that show its base rim.

Random thoughts on Northleach, Sts. Peter & Paul, Gloucestershire #FontCover Perhaps inspired by the C14 font w its heads, the c. 1500 porch vault repeats these amid quatrefoils and mouchettes, also seen on the font cover. All were part of the visual vocabulary.
