An end-of-semester treat for me @TuftsNutrition was a return to our #FoodEcon class potluck, with prizes for delicious & healthy dishes that also meet each of four other needs: frugality, convenience, sustainability and community. Food = life = stories!

As both @tundeleye and @EbubeIsaac have pointed out, the real danger in these rising food costs is in rising protein costs.
This will show up in #Nigeria's productivity numbers in future.

Spot on from @CamCavendish -- the future of #FoodPolicy is higher nutritional standards.
Plenty of #FoodEcon evidence (https://t.co/tY38A8JPMQ) says we should regulate nutrients as we do food safety (and auto & home safety), by ruling out harmful stuff.

@jasonfurman Yes! My intro #FoodEcon for @TuftsNutrition grad students is a Principles course that brings in frontier ideas by jettisoning the less relevant diagrams like cost curves. We use agriculture, food and nutrition to cover production, markets, behavior and political economy:

This new #FoodEcon paper finds high prices for fruits & vegetables in low-income places, which they explain by fixed costs in retailing.
Interesting...

Previously I posted some graphs describing the recent jumps in cereal prices. I suggested this was bad news for those in low- and middle-income countries. Here I briefly follow up and dive a little deeper into the issue (with some references to relevant articles).
Something new in my #FoodEcon teaching is real-time zoom chat in the classroom. Students in the room can type instead of raising hands to talk, and do so anonymously if they want. Online students too. Here's a screenshot from Echo360 of what in-room and online students both see:

Just learned that the wonderful
@Norbert_Wilson has been appointed director of the World Food Policy Center @DukeWFPC @DukeSanford, succeeding Kelly Brownell, from July 1st. Congratulations to them all, a great move for Duke and for #FoodEcon & the @AAEA_Economics community.
Our review of #FoodEcon for nutrition traces the ongoing search for just-right dietary energy, nutrients & food groups.
We pack a lot in (39,000 words, 294 refs), thanks to great coauthors @ameliafinaret & Steve Block, eds @cbb2cornell & @DavidJust1 + lots of other help!

For this semester's first #FoodEcon class session @TuftsNutrition, we explored ways of interacting in class. I messed up the @polleverywhere setup (hey, mistakes are how we learn!), and experimented with something genuinely new: what if we made Zoom chat *anonymous*?
