🔍 During #FENS2023 Dr. @OllyWitard from @KCLBMBioscience made a presentation about 'Taking a Food-First Approach to Protein Recommendations: The Matrix Effect.' 🏃‍♀️💪Muscle protein synthesis (MPS) is primarily stimulated by amino acids. The “leucine trigger” hypothesis suggests that leucine is the primary stimulus for MPS. However, recent studies suggest the importance of the food matrix effect, where interactions between nutrients and non-nutrient components would impact protein digestion and amino acid absorption rates. These findings indicate that current protein recommendations, based on isolated proteins, might need revision to consider the food matrix effect for optimizing MPS, particularly during exercise recovery.💓🩺 🔑 Key messages from the presentation 1⃣ The ingestion of protein-dense whole foods stimulate a robust MPS response despite eliciting a slower rise in leucine availability during exercise recovery.
