February 17 - 21, 2024 #GPE_AtrocityReport and #GPE_RedAlert summary Targeted attacks against Amharas has flared in a coordinated manner across many areas in Ethiopia. We are following up on these incidents, an entry of incidents are summarized below. Multiple incidents related with #WarOnAmhara and #ForcedRepatriations have been reported and they are all developing situations. The human rights situation for Amharas in Ethiopia has extremely deteriorated, surprisingly at a time when the nation is hosting African Union meetings. It is a failure on the part of the leaders of the continent if they fail to recognize this humanitarian calamity in Ethiopia. February 17, 2024 #GPE_AtrocityReport #MeshentiMassacre: over 50 civilians were gunned down in the vicinity known as Meshenti 18 kms out of Bahir Dar city, #WestGojam Zone, #AmharaRegion, #Ethiopia. February 18, 2024 #GPE_AtrocityReport #ForcedRepatriation of Amhara IDP from camps in #DebreBirhan city is being executed by the regime in Ethiopia against the will of Amhara survivors of #AmharaGenocide. Fourteen buses full of Amhara Genocide survivors were taken to the areas from which they escaped horrific massacres that targeted Amhara residents. GPE as well as other human rights organizations and local media have been sounding alarm about this issue for more than 2 months now (recent reference: https://t.co/Z26u5KLi6b). The 14 busses out of Debre Birhan were destined to #Oromo Region, #EastWollega zone #WayuTuka, #TiguFire #Anno #Bako and to #WestShoa zone #AmboZuria. Out of the 14 buses 13 buses have already arrived. The survivors are housed in makeshift camps. February 19, 2024 #GPE_AtrocityReport 45 passengers were kidnapped near #Senbete town by OLA, 21 brutally killed February 19, 2024 #GPE_AtrocityReport Drone strike in Sela Dingay, 60 civilians allegedly killed around #Sassit. GPE received confirmation for the deaths of 30 people, and 15 people are injured and are referred to a hospital in #DebreBirhan city. Further investigation will follow. February 20, 2024 #GPE_AtrocityReport 27 families (77 people) from #Harbu, #NorthWollo Zone, #AmharaRegion were forcefully repatriated to Wollega, #OromoRegion in one bus. Additionally, Amhara survivors were forcibly repatriated from #Senkele, #Argoba Special Zone, #Amhara Region. They are going to be housed in a makeshift camp in #Chekorsa. Cherkosa was the epicenter of #ToleMassacre that took place on June 18, 2022. We have also reported in a GPE X space session that, a makeshift shelter that was built in #Cherkosa back in January, 2024 to showcase an effort to return IDPs by the regime in Ethiopia was totally destroyed just a couple of days after, allegedly by Oromo Liberation Army (#OLA) fighters (some local reports indicated that local administrators themselves may have been involved). February 21, 2024 #GPE_RedAlert #GPE_AtrocityReport Eight Amhara survivors were already murdered after being forcibly repatriated to #BubuSeyo woreda #EastWollega zone, #Oromo Region. The rest of the survivors that were forcibly repatriated from various camps to this location are under siege. We demand that they are immediately taken to safety. The entire chain of command that led to their forcible repatriation is responsible for their death. These survivors have repeatedly made it known that they do not want to return to these places without any change being made to the local, regional and federal level structures that led to these massacres in the first place. We raise this alarm in utmost urgency! #GPE_Note: We urge all human rights defenders to stand by these survivors who were let down by all mechanisms that were supposed to protect them as humans, citizens, and civilians. These identity based massacres against Amharas have been ongoing for over 4 years in these areas. To send children, women and senior citizens to an area of genocide hotspot they escaped from is cruel and unacceptable.
