I was going to wait until #ForeEdgeFriday to post these glitzy blue, red & gold fore-edges @theULSpecColl, but they’re too good to wait. On Gibbon’s Decline & Fall (Dublin, 1788-9), from the library of the Earl & Countess of Enniskillen (CCC.48.12-17). #foredgefriday
For #ForeedgeFriday, an intact vellum label on the fore-edges of Ochino’s 'Liber de corporis Christi', 1561. The book would have been shelved with the edges facing out [H2220.O2] #ForedgeFriday

As it's #ForeedgeFriday we want to share a #Shelfie of the bottom edge of a 16th century book, on which a previous owner has written an abbreviated title! Did you know that books were not always stored with the spine facing out? #ForedgeFriday [RESERVE--808.1-SCA] 👁️📚👁️

Putting #gardening at the forefront! The former owner of this book [Systema horti-culturae: or, the art of gardening, 950 Wor] added a fore-edge title label made of paper to their book, which gives us a clue as to how it was once shelved. #ForeedgeFriday #ForedgeFriday #Shelfie

The "fore-edge" or "foredge" is the outer-most edge of a book. The edges of traditional Pothi Sahibs were sometimes decorated. Though it now looks worn and faded, this image shows the simple painted folk motifs on the tail edge of a c19th century Guru Granth Sahib.
