One of the ways #Shakespeare sought to dehumanise #RichardIII (who was born OTD in 1452) was by presenting him as childless. Richard’s son Edward of Middleham, however, played a critical role in his father’s life & decision making. See my profile of this #forgottenchild below for more details.
OTD in 1483 - Edward of Middleham, son of #RichardIII was invested as Prince of Wales in an opulent ceremony at York Minster. Edward’s life was short & tragic.
He is the original #forgottenchild not even appearing in Shakespeare’s play, with the King depicted as childless. Shakespeare takes many dramatic liberties in his depiction of Richard, but I’d argue the erasure of Richard’s son is one of the most significant. Edward played a key role in shaping the course
of his father’s life & reign, & if we forget him we can never hope to discover the real man behind the theatre anti-hero.
Edward is the only known child of Richard’s marriage to Anne Neville. His birth date is unconfirmed with estimates ranging from December 1473 (Tudor chronicles) to mid June- early September 1476 (Rous Roll evidence of Edward’s age at his death.) NB. the second later date is the one advocated by the leading modern experts on Edward’s life, Peter Hammond & Annette Carson.
Whatever Edward’s birth date the depths of his parents’ devotion to him is clear. Richard’s charter appointing Edward as Prince of Wales on 24 August 1483 is notable for the praise it lavishes on his ‘dearest first born son’ referring to his ‘outstanding qualities with which he is singularly endowed for his age.’ Similarly, the Croyland Chronicle relates how news of Edward’s death in April 1484 drove his ‘father and mother… almost out of their minds for a long time when faced with the sudden grief.’
The timing of the Duke of Buckingham’s disenchantment with Richard seems to correlate with the extensive powers granted to Richard’s son, Edward of Middleham, as part of his September 1483 investiture as Prince of Wales. This development undermined Buckingham’s hegemony in the region & may have been viewed by him as Richard reneging on a previous agreement. This provided fertile ground for the arch Lancastrian plotter, Bishop Morton, who was under house arrest in Buckingham’s household, to persuade the Duke to mount his own bid for the throne that autumn with Lancastrian support.
Likewise Edward’s death in April 1484 marked a key turning point in Richard’s reign when things started to go wrong for the King. Even though most historians now accept that Edward did not die on the first anniversary of #EdwardIV’s death in some sort of karmic reckoning (Rous recorded Palm Sunday - 18 April 1484 as the date of death) the loss of his only heir was interpreted by contemporaries as a sign of divine disfavour & emboldened Richard’s opponents.
The King’s own behaviour also changed after the death of his son & then his wife in March 1485. It is notable that he waited at Nottingham with uncharacteristic passivity for two months for Henry Tudor’s invasion in the summer of 1485 rather than moving swiftly to meet the threat head on as he had done on previous occasions. It is also debatable whether Richard would have undertaken his final reckless charge at Bosworth - see my linked post below - if his wife & son had still been alive.
But naturally, Shakespeare could not include any of this in his play, as it would risk humanising Richard & implying that protecting & advancing his family rather than villainy might have been key drivers for his decision making. The erasure of Edward of Middleham had begun.
