@usairforce @AusAirForce @NZAirForce 6: … IAF pilots flying that day included F/L MS Pujji (later DFC) of 4 Sqn + his frequent wingman F/O KG Raman. F/O BN Surendra (also later DFC) flew a BDA assessment sortie shortly after, with F/O Raman again as wingman. Stories of India's #ForgottenFewIAF … /7

8: c 2006 a French association came looking for his NoK; @vayusena amplified their search; the family was found; & a ceremony was held with Indian AA Paris in attendance. Some details here; a little more about Thyagarajan in my book #ForgottenFewIAF:

@claremulley @WW2girl1944 @robgawlowski Must listen!! I squeezed in a mention of the Polish contribution in my (20% over contracted word-count) book #ForgottenFewIAF, while recounting the work of FECB cryptographers in Ceylon & Delhi who were working on Japanese Navy codes. Knew @WW2girl1944 would appreciate it!!
Thank you so much, @AviationXtended, for the platform, and for the nice words about my book, #ForgottenFewIAF. Fwiw, this screenshot includes one of the comments on my book which means a great deal to me:

Absolute pleasure working with @TheBrownBeagle, these features have enlightened us on the role of Indian airmen and hope the listeners enjoy them.
Now go buy the book :

617 Sqn was in India, late '45 - mid '46, afaict barely covered in popular history (Osprey mentions). Both Gibson & Cheshire have personal India links. I have a few pages about 617, in #ForgottenFewIAF.
@SpitfireFilly, in case interested:

#ForgottenFewIAF: On 15 Jan 1944 6 Sqn IAF, operating from Cox's Bazaar, received a warning-out order to move to Ratnap. Then-Fg Off GBS Bhullar, in pic, was shot down, but nursed his Hurricane back to friendly territory and made it back. He had only joined the sqn on 06 Dec 43

@robert_lyman Thanks Rob. The 1961-reestablished IV Corps certainly lived up to its 1945 standards. I said even in #ForgottenFewIAF, 3 yrs ago, that there'd be a straight line from Louis Allen's "blitzkrieg-style panache" phrase to another campaign in similar terrain, 25 years later.
617 Sqn RAF, & their frequent partners IX Sqn RAF, deployed to India in 1945-46, part of Tiger Force plans if Japan hadn't surrendered to the atom bomb in Aug '45. Long after Gibson (& Cheshire)'s CO tenures. Sketchily documented, but a few pages in my book #ForgottenFewIAF
19 Sept 1944, Wing Cdr Guy Gibson, died in action over Holland, aged 26. Born in India. Led RAF 617 Squadron in Operation Chastise, Dambusters raid, for which he was awarded Victoria Cross, becoming at time most highly decorated British serviceman. Completed 170+ operations. #WW2

@SpitfireFilly @BeaverWestminst @spirit_spitfire @BeaverWestminst & I unknowingly published books with the same title in 2019 - his on RN pilots in the BoB, mine on the Indian Air Force in WW2. But we were both beaten by 10 years: Adam Zamoyski used the title for his book on the Polish Air Force

@pirateirwin @RevdPye @militaryhistori @RAFMUSEUM @GilesMacDonogh @MargyMayell @bermicourt @JRGStuff @StephenClarkeNZ @pettore @michaelkeegan14 My last book, #ForgottenFewIAF, mentioned Gp Capt CGI Philip of 8 Sqn IAF in WW2. His brother Tommy Philip joined the IAF post-1947, suffered burns in a bad crash, & was taken by the IAF to Sir Archibald's clinic. Didn't survive, but I thought it a nice connection of the times 🙏🏽
Air Mshl King-Lee is, as it happens, an Old Boy of the same school I finished schooling at (it was about my 9th school - services kid 🤷🏽♂️). I called on him in 2020 to present him with a copy of my last book, #ForgottenFewIAF. He was wonderfully encouraging - thank you Sir🙏🏽
Air Mshl Douglas George King-Lee, AVSM PVSM is the oldest surviving Air Mshl of the @IAF_MCC . He was commissioned in 1944 & served in WWII. This thread lives through his exciting career that culminated with a tenure as AOC-in-C of Eastern Air Command in 1983. #IAFHistory (1/12)

(1/3) Courtesy of https://t.co/AIjixg60iC - the Grave Marker of LAC S J F Desai who is the lone RIAF airman buried in Hong Kong. Likely to have died when the advance party of 4 Sqn RIAF reached Hong Kong via MV Dunera in March 1946 on its way to Japan #RIAFWW2 #ForgottenFewIAF

A rare booklet "IAF Over Burma" published to cover the role of the IAF in WW2 now featured on our site:

... Sadly I never actually met Air Marshal Ramachandran, but was delighted to be told by his family that he read and enjoyed my book, #ForgottenFewIAF. The pandemic stopped travel and meetings before I could thank him:

@marinamaral2 @jcvstephenson @vayusena @DilipMbe 9: ... And to end with apologies for the self-plug, there is more in my book, #ForgottenFewIAF:

OTD in 1944, Fg Off JC Verma (pic 1) & Plt Off I Battacharji (pic 2) of 6 Sqn IAF engaged 3 IJAAF Oscars over the Arakan. Battacharji was shot down (tho' he survived); Verma shot down an Oscar, 1st confirmed IAF air-to-air kill over Burma. More in my book #ForgottenFewIAF ...

@montaguethecat @MartinKoenigsb2 😊 Very much on their last legs. I have written about this, in #ForgottenFewIAF & elsewhere. The Indian AF started WW2 with biplane Wapitis, biplane Harts, & a few Lysanders. They got Hurricanes when the RAF was getting Spitfires. They did get one sqn of Spitfires ...
And another personal connection through my late father-in-law's logbook - flying in the 1956 R-Day flypast, crewing for his squadron CO Wg Cdr GBS Bhullar, another WW2 veteran featured in #ForgottenFewIAF:

Recalling our 1st R-Day 1950. For all implementation flaws our Constitution remains a great ideal. Gov Gen Rajagoplachari's IAF ADC in these pics was then Flt Lt, later Air Cmde KL Suri, one of the WW2 vets I had the privilege of getting to know while writing #ForgottenFewIAF
