I've always thought @NPRinskeep 's voice & storytelling added life to stories that might otherwise have gotten lost in the rapid pace of the news cycle. He certainly brought to life this story about my brother #freeEmad, the @bofhcampaign mural by @isaacampbellart in @georgetowndc, & the American hostages & wrongful detainees featured on it. People who had never heard about my brother, the Campaign, or the mural heard Steve's story & reached out to offer support. I guess this also speaks to the power & reach of radio.
Hostage diplomacy is real. Ordinary Americas ARE taken hostage overseas bcs they are American. Our government acknowledges this, having passed the Levinson Act (2020) & an Executive Order (2022) which acknowledges that “hostage-taking and the wrongful detention of United States nationals abroad constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States.”
President Biden declared a national emergency to deal with this issue.
These are all steps in the right direction as are deterrence measures BUT, the priority of those in the USG dealing with hostage diplomacy should first be to bring home Americans, like my brother, who have already been wrongfully taken.
My brother was wrongfully taken April 23rd 2018. Today is July 27 2023. He is still not back home in D.C. It does not seem like his wrongful detention was dealt with as a national emergency.
We need to do MORE & we need to move FASTER.
