My (birth)day was made! Received blessings from Gurudasbab Kunde, a fatherly figure to me. He has a special place in my heart. He is one of the few #FreedomFighters who lived with principles and struggled in #FreeGoa from #farming skills to #accounting rather than bending and crawling. Till yesterday, this 90-year old iron man was the President of the Goa Freedom Fighters’ Association.
Why a special place in my heart? It is an interesting story. I was born on 15 August 1960 at my grandparent’s rented house at Hari Mandir chawl in #Madgao. Hearing the news, freedom fighter friends of my parents gathered on the road and started dancing. The #Portuguese police rushed there to stop them since celebration of India’s #IndependenceDay wasn’t permitted in #Goa.
“Independence Day? No. A baby boy is born”, they said joyously and continued “celebrating”! The police had no option but to go back.
Saying that the boy has arrived on India’s Independence Day with an advance “message” of Goa’s Liberation, Gurudasbab named me SANDESH. A real matter of pride for me!
I owe it to him and the whole freedom fighter community, as a co-opted Secretary of the Freedom Fighters’ Association and a proud son of the freedom fighter couple.
