Suttons Bay Man Arrested for Drug and Weapon Offenses FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Date: September 24, 2025 GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, MI. On September 19 at approximately 3:50 p.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Traverse City Post initiated a narcotics investigation when they learned of a possible narcotics deal occurring in a local parking lot on Airport Road in Garfield Township. Troopers conducted surveillance and observed what they believed was a narcotic exchange. Troopers conducted an investigative traffic stop on the suspect vehicle and contacted the driver, a juvenile from Traverse City, and the passenger, 20-year-old Joshua Smith of Suttons Bay. The roadside investigation revealed that Smith had a handgun in his pocket, which was seized by troopers. Troopers also seized suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia with suspected cocaine inside. Smith was arraigned in the 86th District Court in Grand Traverse County on September 23 on one count of Possession of Controlled Substance (less than 25 grams) and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. Smith was given a $10,000 cash or surety bond. His next court appearance is on October 7 at 2:00 p.m. Troopers were assisted by the MSP Canine Unit and the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office.
