First mega freight facility for Telangana in Warangal - News - The Times of India
1. Purpose and Scope
Specialized Maintenance: The facility will focus on Periodic Overhauling (POH) and Routine Overhauling (ROH) of goods wagons. Unlike basic maintenance, POH involves dismantling and reassembling wagons to ensure long-term safety and efficiency.
Regional Hub: Warangal is already home to a railway manufacturing unit; this new facility will further establish the district as a critical railway hub for South Central Railway (SCR).
2. Project Details
Investment: The project is estimated to cost approximately ₹1,000 crore.
Scale: It will require 200 to 300 acres of land. SCR is currently identifying a suitable site between the Kazipet and Mahabubabad sections.
Timeline: Once the land is finalized and approvals are secured, the facility is expected to be operational within three to five years.
3. Strategic Importance
Logistical Efficiency: Currently, goods wagons in Telangana are sent to Rayanapadu in Andhra Pradesh for overhauling. The new unit will reduce turnaround times and operational costs for the state.
Economic Impact: The facility is expected to create large-scale employment opportunities for both skilled and semi-skilled workers.
Supporting Industry: It will support the growing freight traffic in Telangana, particularly for sectors like coal, cement, steel, food grains, and container traffic.
