Meteorological explanation Strong northwesterly winds (common in March along Lake Michigan) blew across the still-relatively warm lake waters, picking up moisture and super-cooling it. As waves crashed onto the beach, the super-cooled water and spray instantly froze upon contact with the sub-freezing sand and air temperatures (likely well below 20 °F/−7 °C). This created delicate, wind-sculpted ice and frost structures on the sand surface, giving it an otherworldly, almost lunar or coral-like texture. These formations are sometimes called “sand ice,” “frosted dunes,” or “frozen sand ripples” and are a rare but recurring sight on the Great Lakes in late winter/early spring when the right combination of cold air and onshore winds aligns.
