Chile’s government, under Boric, will send a formal note of protest to Colombian President Gustavo Petro over what it described as “unacceptable remarks” following the electoral victory of José Antonio Kast. Among other statements, Petro said, “I will never shake hands with a Nazi.” What makes this moment noteworthy is not the dispute itself, but who is issuing the protest. Despite clear ideological differences with Kast, the Boric administration chooses to defend the democratic process and national sovereignty rather than indulge in ideological alignment. That is not something we have seen often in Latin America in recent years. Boric has consistently put respect for democratic outcomes and basic diplomatic norms above partisan politics. In doing so, his government is showing a level of institutional maturity that should serve as a model for the rest of the hemisphere.
