Hanson currently sits in the Senate, but that does not legally rule her out from becoming prime minister. There is no law preventing a senator from holding the job, although by longstanding convention the prime minister sits in the House of Representatives, where government is formed. John Gorton remains the only senator to have been sworn in as prime minister, before moving to the lower house.
