Reader, be warned this post is about italian facts.
The story around #Emma is much less clear than it looks at first glance. Every time the topic comes up, people act as if the matter is already settled: "It was made by the "#fuffaguru", the one who says he invented the solution to digital sovereignty."
But I actually went and checked, and he never said that. Those words were put in his mouth by a well-known Italian TV commentator, who had already attacked him in the past because of a movie about him.
Now that line gets repeated like a litany, almost like a prayer against evil, under every post. People have only heard it second-hand. They do not really know who said it or why, but they are convinced the sentence belongs to the "fake guru."
The problem is that the article linked by that same commentator does not contain the supposedly damning claim. It says something entirely different. It talks about contributing to European digital sovereignty, not about having invented it. And if anyone thinks that is a minor detail...
The argument also rests on this idea: "someone pointed out to me that some public administrations might take him seriously." Well, why public administrations in particular? And who is this "someone"?
It strikes me as a slightly odd concern, especially given that the commentator in question works precisely with public administrations. A strange coincidence, don't you think?
We are talking about a family of models. Anyone who understands this field, and our friend certainly does, knows that models are built one after another and improved constantly. Yet the criticism focuses only and exclusively on the current version.
"It's just a small model," he says. Of course it is. That is where you start. Everyone starts there.
And it is not as if early versions of small models giving bad answers is something that happened only to him. There are similar examples. The first version of Minerva, developed by Sapienza University, was launched with great fanfare and with similar claims.
I tried it, and it was... problematic. But I am not the only one saying this; see the article in the screenshot. It took them two years to produce a 7B version. Two years.
Everyone knows how hard it is to build models. Creating AI systems that answer correctly is not easy; even the French government, with far greater resources, struggled to do it.
The French government launched its own AI, Lucie, in January. It was taken offline in France within a few days because it was giving absurd, nonsensical answers. And that was the French government.
So my conclusion is simple: fewer personal attacks, more concrete facts, and more attention to what the person being criticized actually said.
Because putting words in someone else's mouth, while counting on the fact that most people will not bother to read the source, is not a contribution to the truth. It is a way of unleashing mob hatred against someone.
