Stevie Wonder. Nothing more needs to be said. Since the age of 12, Stevland Hardaway Morris has lived up to his stage name, "Wonder". A name gifted to him by Motown founder, Berry Gordy, Jr. He broke out with the song "Fingertips" that was written by Clarence Paul and Funk Brother, Henry Crosby (Second Picture).
Stevie's string of hits include "Uptight", "I Was Made to Love Her", "Hey Love" , "My Cherie Amour", and many more. Later on in his career, he became a one man band and producer, essentially writing songs for other artists like The Spinners "It's A Shame", and "Tell Me Something Good" for Rufus & Chaka Khan. In the 70s, his songwriting started to reflect the growing socio-political climate and issues of that day. Those songs included "Living For The City", "Black Man", "Big Brother" and others.
His album, Songs in The Key of Life, is constantly ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time. However, as talented as a songwriter as he was, early in his career, he teamed with Crosby & Sylvia Moy (Third Picture) on many of his hits like "My Cherie Amour" ,"Uptight", "I Was Made To Love Her". Did you know that Stevie was on the verge of being let go from Motown due to the change in his voice after puberty? It was Sylvia Moy who urged Berry Gordy to give Stevie Wonder another chance, and at the age of 15, he hit pay dirt with "Uptight". Dropping "Little" from his stage name, he simply became Stevie Wonder.
