Today we mourn our #GAZAMAP student Anas Aldabaj, killed with his family in their home in Deir el-Balah. Anas was an #archaeology student @IUGAZA, who documented endangered heritage in the #Gaza Strip. A huge, inconceivable and criminal loss that should not be normalised!
A recent article focusing on heritage & #archaeology students and professionals in the Gaza Strip, including #GAZAMAP partners, as well as Jawdat Khoudary, the owner of the now destroyed Al Mathaf museum - the first archaeological museum in #Gaza

#Heritagedestruction is one of too many types of violence Gazans are currently experiencing. Some of the sites were documented by #GAZAMAP students & partners, 3 of whom killed & several displaced. Thanks to their work we have baseline data on site condition up until last July.

#GAZAMAP mapped a notable density of surface finds along the coast of Deir el-Balah #Gaza. Aerial photos show the impact of #coastalerosion & indicate possible #submerged features to be surveyed shortly. Many thanks to @honor_frost & @sotonarch for sponsoring the survey!
#GAZAMAP students trained on aerial imagery capture with @AinMedia at Tell Ruqeish #Gaza. Funded by the @honor_frost GAZAMAP develops a collaborative network of specialists with complementary skills in sustainable, time- and cost-effective monitoring of #maritimeculturalheritage
@yelkhoudary made this happen! #communityengagement events & site visits at Tell Ruqeish #gazamap. Students learned about Gaza's rich maritime heritage and members of the local community shared memories of the #maritimelandscape of Tell Ruqeish since its excavations in the 70s.
Amazing video produced by students in #Gaza #GAZAMAP capturing their work over the past couple of weeks. See them using @kobotoolbox to document actively deteriorating #Archaeology within the rich #maritime landscape of Tell Ruqeish. @MarEA_project @honor_frost @sotonarch

As part of training on #opensource platforms #GAZAMAP has its own @mapillary account. Students are capturing street-level imagery of the exposed scarp and the beach, allowing us to examine the impact of #coastalerosion on maritime #culturalheritage in Gaza.
This year we are documenting the full extent the exposed scarp and partly submerged features of Tell Ruqeish #GAZAMAP - an Iron Age emporion, part of a broader maritime cultural landscape in the southern Levant @MarEA_project @honor_frost @yelkhoudary
Creating simple, intuitive forms for the documentation of endangered maritime heritage in Gaza. @kobotoolbox has been very useful in the collection of observations with a standardised glossary #GAZAMAP @honor_frost
Using free and #opensourcesoftware is key for heritage data collection in #Gaza. #GAZAMAP students are trained to use @kobotoolbox and @mapillary. Looking forward to testing these at Tell Ruqeish tomorrow!
