Day 4 of #ASTA2026: From the Green Center to the OCP Khouribga Site
The lectures gave us the theory; Khouribga gave us the industrial reality of global food security. Standing at the edge of the world’s largest phosphate reserve, you realize the Water-Energy-Food-Climate Nexus isn't just a concept—it’s a massive, moving operation.
✅ The Scale of Impact Khouribga is the heart of global phosphate production, accounting for nearly 70% of OCP’s output. I was particularly struck by the 187km slurry pipeline, a massive engineering feat that uses gravity and water to transport phosphate to the coast, drastically cutting both carbon emissions and transport costs.
✅ A Green Blueprint for Mining:
OCP is proving that industrial giants can lead the green transition. Through a $13 billion green investment strategy, this site is moving toward 100% renewable energy by 2027. Most impressively, they’ve achieved a major milestone in water sovereignty with a 200km desalination pipeline, ensuring that mining operations no longer compete with local communities for fresh water.
✅ The Livestock Connection: PHOSFEED®
Seeing the production of PHOSFEED® was a highlight. Phosphorus isn't just for crops; it’s a critical building block for animal health.
- Record Digestibility: Sourced from research by Wageningen Livestock Research, PHOSFEED® 21 has achieved a 90.3% digestibility level, the highest ever measured for its category.
- Why the PHOSFEED®?
Higher digestibility means better feed conversion and stronger skeletal growth for our livestock, while significantly reducing phosphorus waste in the environment.
Standing in these mines, the Nexus becomes real. You see how Energy (solar/wind) and Water (desalination) are used to extract the Food (phosphorus) that feeds the world.
The lessons are a powerful blueprint for our own agricultural transformation.

Just a farmer out of the field to attend #ASTA2026 in Morocco! 🇲🇦
I’m at the @UM6P_official Benguerir Campus to learn and share insights on the Water-Energy-Food-Climate Nexus from Moroccan and Brazilian experts.
Why this matters:
✅ Knowledge Exchange: Bridging the gap between Africa and Brazil.
✅ Resource Efficiency: Learning to balance water and energy for better food systems.
✅ Practical Impact: Taking high-level science back to the actual field.
