On #EpilepsyDay Glut1 DS early presenting features include infantile-onset epilepsy, unusual eye-head movements and seizures. Any Epilepsy associated with movement disorders should suggest Glut1DS. #TogetherForGlut1 #glut1deficiency #EpilepsyDay2023 #InternationalEpilepsyDay

Treatment for #Glut1Deficiency - a #KetogenicDiet is the standard of care
as #ketones provide an alternative energy source for the brain.

#Glut1Deficiency is a #rare #GeneticDisorder that impairs brain metabolism caused by mutations in the #SLC2A1 gene, which regulates the protein responsible for transporting glucose across the blood brain barrier into the brain. Today is #Glut1AwarenessDay
@Glut1UK

Thank you for having me on and highlighting #glut1deficiency. Lots of fun, could have talked for hours! @TempleStreetHos @RCPI_news @UCDMedicine
Who knew that a genetic issue restricting glucose absorption (to the brain) could cause an #epilepsy?! Tomo hear @KMGorman_Neuro tells us about #genetic epilepsies - including the rare genetic epilepsy #GLUT1 Deficiency Disorder.

What's 1⃣ thing paroxysmal eye-head mov'ts in 👶, early-onset absence epilepsy & intermittent ataxia have in common?
*⃣ All can be caused by impaired glucose transport into the 🧠 (and, if so, treated w/ the keto diet!)

Just announced! The 2021 MDBR Pilot Grant Program is now open and accepting Letters of Interest (LOIs)! Apply here today: https://t.co/SqdGGiSQij LOIs due 9/16. Grants are open to the international research community. #raredisease #rfa #pennmedmdbr2021 #rarediseasegrants

12/ SLC2A1+/- brain endothelial cells have impaired barrier function, impaired glucose uptake, impaired GLUT1 expression, impaired angiogenesis, both in vitro and in vivo. Our research would not have been possible without @G1DFoundation grants. Please donate!
#glut1deficiency.
5/ Glucose transporters comes in two flavors: Na-dependent, Na-independent transporters. Na-independent transporters mostly part of the SLC2AX (GLUTs) family. At the BBB, SLC2A1 is the main isoform, followed by SLC2A3 and SLC2A4. #Glut1Deficiency
4/ Glucose enters our cells thanks to an array of various protein transporters called under the umbrella term of "glucose transporters", which belongs to the super-family of solute carriers (SLCs) which come with >400 different flavors. #Glut1deficiency
3/ Glucose is a pyrannose, fully packed with hydroxyl groups, which makes it very polar and hydrophilic. This creates a problem because polar molecules cannot cross cell membranes passively. So how does glucose reach the brain from blood? Thanks to tranporters.
