Technologies has successfully tested a long range SatCom link for Command, Control, Communication, Computing & Intelligence C4I functions of a Drone Swarm.
Features demonstrated in this pioneering mission -
Beyond line of sight BLOS connectivity between a drone swarm connected to satellite communication network & remote ground control station GCS. The SatCom network provides assured connectivity over all parts of the globe (except the poles).
The mission was carried out at Ladakh at 4200m altitude. The mission was planned, executed and monitored from NRT HQ in Bengaluru (which is more than 3000 km away).
Seamless communication was available throughout the mission with telemetry & payload #data from the swarm. Minimal latency was observed in the network
This demonstration paves the way for remote BLOS operations for drone swarms across the length & breath of India; improves mission resilience in contested environments.
Multiple #users at various locations can benefit from this cutting edge solution which leverages encrypted SatCom links, helping close the OODA response time much faster. The capability will boost NRT's Next Generation Missions & Technologies NGMT initiative.

Could Starlink Answer Globalstar’s $10B SOS?
Globalstar’s #GSAT stock lit up late last month after word spread that chairman James Monroe might sell the company for $10B — nearly double the company’s market cap. While appearing somewhat reality-adjacent, that price churned up enough market noise to force Globalstar’s satellite prime contractor #MDA Space to issue an update on Oct. 30, distancing itself from “unconfirmed and speculative media reports related to M&A in our customer base.”
While the fuse of speculation has just been lit, a Globalstar distress signal would not be hard to see beneath the smoke:
- The Apple #AAPL repayment clock is ticking> Globalstar must repay $252M in 2023 prepayments over 16 quarters, beginning in Q3 2025 and ending in Q2 2029.
- Front-loaded cash, back-loaded risk> In October 2024, Apple agreed to provide up to another $1.1B through Infrastructure Prepayments to fund the C-3 Extended MSS satellite network and retire Globalstar’s 13% 2029 Notes. The $1.1B is paid quarterly during construction but must be earned back through Apple’s service usage. If milestones slip or coverage targets aren’t met, Apple may demand repayment and still retain its 20% equity stake in Globalstar Licensee LLC (the subsidiary that holds Globalstar’s spectrum licenses), along with its rights to network capacity.
- Capacity constrained> Under their Services Agreement, Apple controls 85% of all current and future network capacity, leaving Globalstar only 15% to monetize elsewhere.
- Limited diversification> The company’s only other meaningful growth drivers – a RM200M IoT module and terrestrial n53 spectrum – aren’t yet large enough to offset dependence on Apple.
All that said, the $10B sale price seems more aspirational than actual, and possibly even napkin-mathed on the heels of the EchoStar deal, where ~50 MHz fetched a ~$425M/MHz multiple. That figure overlooks the fact that Globalstar’s bands are narrow, internationally fragmented, and power-limited under #MSS rules. And that any sale would have to tiptoe around the Apple commitment, which effectively turns Globalstar’s constellation into a Cupertino timeshare. Hard to justify a $10B purchase when someone else already owns most of the weekends.
Plus, Globalstar’s spectrum isn’t free and clear — it’s encumbered collateral under a single-tenant master lease. That is why SpaceX is being floated as the most plausible buyer. Beyond its practically unlimited access to capital, the synergies with Starlink’s DTC strategy are pretty textbook:
- SpaceX is already acquiring EchoStar’s AWS-4 | 2 GHz spectrum.
- Starlink’s V3 MSS satellite architecture is designed to support the L/S band Apple already uses for SOS.
- SpaceX has been pressuring the FCC to open up Globalstar’s 1.6 | 2.4 GHz band for sharing since early 2024. The FCC docket (RM-11975) to update two-decade-old rules and open the “long-fallow” spectrum to new entrants is dormant, but not dead.
Technical and strategic benefits aside, it’s worth remembering the likely reason Apple might have avoided partnering with Starlink to begin with is its fear of alienating MNOs.
Apple relies upon MNOs for ~75% of iPhone sales. Its partnership with Globalstar can be understood as a way to add value to iPhones without entering the fray of satellite and telco co-opetition when it comes to #DTD. If Apple wants to remain neutral, then there might be another path with upside for all.
Multi-Tenant Hosted Payload
A sale of Globalstar to #SpaceX could proceed with minimal fallout if structured as a multi-tenant hosted-payload model. Under this approach:
- SpaceX provides the space layer and hosted-payload buses, leveraging Globalstar’s unused L/S-band spectrum and n53 terrestrial rights to deploy local 5G or private cell sites aligned with the Starlink 2 GHz DTC roadmap.
- MDA continues manufacturing Globalstar’s C-3 satellites, preserving Apple’s milestone schedule and repayment terms.
- Globalstar remains the licensed MSS operator within a SpaceX-owned subsidiary, preserving regulatory continuity and Apple’s service agreements while leasing spectrum access under the FCC’s Supplemental Coverage from Space (SCS) rules.
- Apple retains control of the application layer and iPhone integration, ensuring continuity for its SOS and emergency messaging services.
- MNOs join through roaming and authentication agreements, keeping carriers commercially involved and compliant with the SCS framework.
This structure allows SpaceX to acquire Globalstar’s assets without triggering repayment clauses or service interruptions, keeps Apple’s and MDA’s contracts intact, and gives carriers a path into a shared DTC ecosystem that advances SpaceX’s broader 2 GHz ambitions with minimal collateral damage or regulatory blowback.
For now, the GSAT sale is just a rumor. But it does have enough legs to warrant catching up to before it speeds too far ahead.
