Shillong: In a significant development, the #Garolanguage has been included in the tentative list of languages under consideration for official recognition in the #EighthSchedule of the Indian Constitution. This decision was confirmed by Meghalaya Speaker, Thomas A Sangma, following a meeting between a delegation from the National People’s Party (NPP) and the Achik Literature Society (ALS) with the Union Home Ministry's Home Secretary, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, in Delhi on Friday. The Union Home Ministry has assured that both the Garo and Khasi languages are among the 32 languages currently undergoing scrutiny by the Central Government, as stated by the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. The delegation, comprising leaders from the National People’s Party, including Lok Sabha MP Agatha Sangma, Speaker Thomas A Sangma, and Marcuise N Marak, met with the Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi. Dr. Caroline R Marak, President of the A’chik Literature Society representing Garo, along with other members, were also part of the delegation led by Agatha K Sangma. It should be noted that in the initial phase, the Garo Language was not listed on the Ministry's official website among the 32 languages under consideration. However, Speaker Thomas A Sangma confirmed that the Home Secretary has assured them that this omission will be rectified, and the Garo Language will be officially recognized as part of the list. The current list of languages under consideration on the Ministry's website includes Angika, Banjara, Bazika, Bhojpuri, Bhoti, Bhotia, Bundelkhandi, Chhattisgarhi, Dhatki, English, Garhwali (Pahari), Gondi, Gujjar/Gujjari, Ho, Kachachhi, Kamtapuri, Karbi, Khasi, Kodava (Coorg), Kokborok, Kumaoni (Pahari), Kurak, Kurmali, Lepcha, Limbu, Mizo (Lushai), Magahi, Mundari, Nagpuri, Nicobarese, Pahari (Himachali), Pali, Rajasthani, Sambalpuri/Kosali, Shaurseni (Prakrit), Siraiki, Tenyidi, and Tulu. Notably, the Garo Language was initially missing from this list.
