My sister, myself and one of my brothers were in the GATE Program 📚🎓✏️ “THE STAR INSIDE YOU” GATE stands for Gifted and Talented Education (also called TAG or G&T). These programs identify and support students who show high ability or potential in academics, creativity, leadership, arts, or specific subjects and who need more challenge than a typical classroom offers. There is no single centralized U.S. federal “GATE program” that directly runs or funds these services for gifted kids across the country. Instead, actual programs are managed at the state and local school district level, with wide variation in rules, funding, and availability. The only dedicated federal effort is the Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Education. Created in 1988 and reauthorized under the Every Student Succeeds Act, it provides competitive grants for research, demonstration projects, and innovative strategies aimed at helping schools better identify and serve gifted students - especially those from underrepresented groups such as low-income families, minority students, English learners, and children with disabilities. It does not give direct funding to school districts for their regular GATE programs, though it supports the National Center for Research on Gifted Education. Recent funding has ranged from roughly $9–16.5 million per year depending on congressional appropriations. In practice, gifted education decisions and funding occur mainly at the state and local levels, so services differ significantly across the U.S. Many states require identification of gifted students, and about 6% of public school students participate in such programs. Typical offerings include differentiated instruction in regular classes, pull-out enrichment groups, advanced classes, acceleration, cluster grouping, or specialized magnet programs. Identification usually relies on multiple measures such as cognitive and achievement testing, teacher and parent input, portfolios, and creativity assessments rather than IQ scores alone. The federal definition describes gifted and talented students as those showing high performance capability in intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership areas (or specific academic fields) who require services not ordinarily provided by the school to fully develop those capabilities. Yes the pink drink is real.
