Commenting on the participation of an individual dressed as #Jesus #Christ in Saturday’s Belfast Pride parade, TUV #Equality Spokeswoman Ann McClure said:
“Prior to the parade, TUV articulated—both publicly and privately—concerns conveyed to us by employees in the Civil Service and other organisations that had decided to take part in Belfast Pride. We warned that Belfast Pride is not a neutral celebration. It is a platform for #contentious #political #demands, including positions on #genderIdeology, #family, #education, and #religious #freedom, which are strongly contested.
“Saturday’s event showed that those concerns were justified. Not only did we see the usual examples of 21st-century blackface, with #grotesque #parodies of womanhood on parade and #overtly #sexual displays, but there was also someone dressed as "Jesus Christ" — complete with a #mock #crown of #thorns — dancing down the street and high-fiving people on the pavement.
“This is extremely #offensive to #Christians and would not be tolerated if it were directed at other religions. Belfast Pride likes to portray itself as edgy and anti-establishment, but there would have been no question of #Mohammed being mocked in such a fashion. They fear #Islam
“#Christianity, on the other hand, is regarded as a soft target.
“It is important to remember that people of different religious beliefs are protected under Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act. This is something all employers—including the #CivilService and the #BBC—need to take into account when deciding whether to participate in Belfast Pride next year, following this year’s #blasphemous display.
“Controversial political slogans relating to the Supreme Court ruling, the banning of so-called ‘conversion therapy’, and the decision to protect children from life-altering drugs were also in abundance throughout the parade.
“TUV will be challenging the public sector bodies that used taxpayers’ money to purchase a place in the parade, asking how participation was compatible with both their #Section75 obligations to people of different religious beliefs and the requirement for an apolitical workplace.
“Belfast Pride cannot wash its hands of this #attack #on #Christianity. Marshals were present along the route, and yet this individual was permitted to proceed.” END.
