Away from geopolitics: What the overwhelming majority of Western officials, analysts and citizens I talk to don't seem to get (because they don't care, don't know, can't feel etc) is how the disaster in Gaza has completely disabused a large segment of liberals and professionals in the Arab world about Western claims of upholding and caring about values in the conduct of foreign policy. They look at the Western debacle over Gaza and feel betrayed, or for those who were always cynical about the West, vindicated. For example, some who sympathized with Ukraine have now switched their position. Senior Western officials and diplomats are mostly clueless about this dynamic. Yes, this is a very small group, but it is an influential and increasingly vocal one. It is composed of excellent professionals in consulting, technology, finance, business, engineering who had exposure to and experience in the West and were positively inclined (though not necessarily aligned). Ignore them at your own risk.
