Today's result is a @FineGael failure, not a @HeatherH one. #aras25 But yet again, just like after #ge16, #ge20 #ge24 & other election campaigns there will be calls for reflection & listening. Reflection with no mirrors & listening with fingers in ears.

People forget #GE20 was triggered by a confidence motion by @MichaelC_IND_TD on @SimonHarrisTD's performance in Health. @fiannafailparty wouldn't support him and @LeoVaradkar rushed an election. Afterwards Harris was retained in cabinet and ridiculously became Taoiseach.

Maybe he is just accident prone but how often is @SimonHarrisTD there when there is a failure. Is this just coincidence? And can you be Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister for Defence, Minister for Trade and Tanaiste, all at the same time? Are the Irish public being mugged off? @AontuIE @AontuHelen

He dismissed talking to SF after #GE20 after telling the electorate beforehand that "People want change" and don't consider FG. He then gets into bed with FG and GP (again - after the bail out!). 👍

Yes SF gave an alternative, one that was so unrealistic or unattractive that for every 5 people who voted for them in #ge20 only 4 stuck with them in #ge20.

@BobbyBobness @KeithMillsD7 Romantic view? Those younger are looking at emigrating, can't afford homes under ffg, SF gave an alternative, whether you like it or not! The older people pulled the rope up on the younger voters, we all know that!

@LarryPDonnelly If you view #ge20 as freakish then there is almost no path to SF ever being in government. Parties come and go in waves. If 2020 is SF's high water mark (which it may well be) their growth narrative is dead.

SF had an awful #ge24. They lost a higher vote share than any other party. They gained only 2 seats out of the additional 14 and would have lost seats had they ran enough candidates in #ge20. They went backwards when every opposition party bar PBP advanced.

And I am not a SF supporter. FF were the clear winners. FG did fine after a poor campaign and having been in government for a long time. But every way I unpack it, I don’t get the “bad general election for SF” analysis. Not a good one, but not a bad one for the reasons given.

Anyone who follows me knows that I've often criticised @MichealMartinTD for going into government with FG after #GE20 after saying that every vote for FF was a vote to get them out. However using one promise being broken to justify another is bonkers.

We heard that Cathal Berry's First Preference postal votes in #GE24 collapsed to less than a third of his #GE20 tally. Can anyone confirm? Must have been all those prisoner & nursing home votes turning their back on him 🤣

#GE24 Two things may save McDonald despite SF's poor performance. Firstly the additional 14 seats has given them gains. They also made gains because they left seats behind in #GE20 by not running enough candidates, so effectively she's being rewarded for historic incompetency.

#ge24 #wicwex My 4th prediction is the new constituency of Wicklow-Wexford. It's one seat each for FF, FG and SF. All three are new TDs, although Malcolm Byrne briefly served as a TD for Wexford from late 2019 to #ge20. Arklow remains the biggest town to never have elected a TD.
