It wasn’t a choice. It was #physics.
The Airbus A380 is the heaviest passenger aircraft ever built, with a maximum takeoff weight of 575 tons. Even the most powerful twinjet engines in the world couldn’t lift it on their own. The #GE90s used on the 777-300ER each produce 115,000 pounds of thrust. The A380 needed over 300,000 pounds just to get off the runway. Two engines weren’t enough.
So Airbus gave it four: either #RollsRoyce Trent 900s or Engine Alliance GP7200s. But that decision locked the A380 into a future it couldn’t win. Extra engines meant extra fuel burn, extra maintenance, and fewer #airport options. By the time the A380 entered service in 2007, the industry had already shifted. #Twinjets like the 777 and later the #A350 and 787 made the A380 look oversized and inefficient.
Worse, the #A380_800 was never meant to be the final version. It was the smaller “base” model in a family that never expanded. #Airbus built it too heavy, powered it with engines a generation too old, and misread where the market was heading.
The #A380 flew too late, too big, and with too many engines for an airline world chasing lower costs. Beautiful, but never built for the future it entered.
