Today in #PHY202 #GenPhys2: Changing the magnetic flux through a loop induces an electromotive force in the loop, driving a current (Faraday's law). The induced current creates a magnetic field that opposes the change in magnetic flux (Lenz's law).

Last time in #PHY202 #GenPhys2: Current moving through a wire creates a magnetic field around the wire, whose direction is given by a right-hand rule. In turn, this magnetic field can exert a force on moving charges, including moving charges in other wires.

Lately in #PHY202 #GenPhys2: A charge moving in a magnetic field experiences a force in a direction determined by a right-hand rule. A current-carrying wire contains moving changes, and so it experiences a force. A current-carrying loop has no net force, but it can have a torque.

Yesterday in #PHY202 #GenPhys2: As a mass falls, its gravitational potential energy is converted to kinetic energy. As a positive charge moves along an electric field, its electric PE is similarly converted to KE. Electric PE is related to electric potential by ΔU = qΔV.

Lately in #PHY202 #GenPhys2: In a topographical map, contour lines show points of equal elevation. Steepness is indicated by the closeness of contour lines. Similarly, equipotential surfaces show points of equal voltage, and the "steepness" gives the electric field.

Lately in #PHY202 #GenPhys2: (1) For small angles, pendula exhibit simple harmonic motion. Oscillations can be damped and/or driven. (2) A wave is a traveling disturbance. Motion shifts a sound wave's frequency (Doppler). Interference explains beats and standing waves.

Today in #PHY202 #GenPhys2: Einstein explained the photoelectric effect by proposing that light, previously discussed as waves, is made of particles (photons). Louis de Brogle proposed that particles are waves. This dual nature of things is called particle-wave duality.

Today in #PHY202 #GenPhys2: A current-carrying loop is placed in a uniform magnetic field (pictured). There's a net torque that spins the loop! Its magnitude is iNABsin(θ), where i = current, N = # turns, A = area of loop, B = magnetic field, θ = angle between A and B.
